So, what kind of cotton? I guess this can be added to the prev question - I just couldn't figure how I could answer in that thread

Admin reply: The cheapest cotton I can find. I've used cotton balls, and also those cut squares for removing makeup or whatever.

Hi Russ,
I was wondering what exactly you put in your yatate? I see silk and cotton mentioned in various places - is it raw fiber, threads, or small pieces of fabric (very unlikely I guess

). Also, have you tried to grind sumi ink, pour it into yatate and keep it liquid/reconstitute with water, or you only use liquid sumi?
Thanks for your advice!

Admin reply: I use liquid sumi in my yatate, to which I add a few drops of water because it's so thick and doesn't absorb well into the cotton. I've tried grinding my own sumi from ink sticks, but it was a lot of work, and I couldn't get the right ink to water ratio. I'm sure I could have gotten it right if I kept practicing though.

Hi,I wanted to ask you regarding a scene in the film 'Silence' when a Japanese woman who refused to renounce her faith was martyred by fire. I thought at first that maybe this scene was Hollywood exaggerating the actual facts - because I'm horrified at the thought that Japanese WOMEN were also martyred. In your careful, expert opinion - during the persecutions of the 16th and 17th centuries - were the numbers of Japanese female Kirishtan martrys in the dozens, the hundreds or the thousands?

Admin reply: I'm hardly an expert, but I haven't found anything suggesting the Tokugawa government made a distinction between male and female believers during the Edo era, and all the eye witness accounts indicate that men, women and children were executed.

So, assuming that half the Kirishitan population was female, I'd say that half of the martyrs were also female, so it would have been in the tens of thousands, assuming the total number of martyrs was around 50,000. The number might be much higher since many executions were not documented.

I suppose that works well enough. Also worth noting, they have discontinued the brush nib attachment. You might have to move the pen to the dip pen section instead. I'm currently waiting for the BBB to get back to me that Mr. Ackerman hasn't contacted them, so I can in good conscience approach paypal with my request for a refund. Might also list ackerman's BBB review page along with your link.

Dear Russ,

I'm contacting you today in regards to a recommendation I found on your blog for Ackerman * * *. I have purchased one of their * * * in addition to a few different nib holders for it, and after a month of no response to numerous emails and calls, I'm contacting you in hopes to prevent my annoyance from happening to anyone else. BBB rates his company an F, and I'm seeing to get my money refunded back through paypal. I highly doubt a business that refuses to deal with customers and doesn't deliver after a month really makes a product that works as advertised anyway. On another note though, my grandmother absolutely loved that walking cane + seat you recommended. I cross referenced it with all the other vendors selling similar, and that was the only product where the negative reviews weren't about the seat breaking on them. I didn't even know such a thing existed till I read it here.
